Recovery
In April 2022 my wife died of Lymphoma, and in February 2023 I had a total hip replacement that immersed me in multiple processes of recovery. The images of myself were made a few weeks after the surgery when I was using a cane for stability. I set up the shoots with a still camera on the tripod in front of me triggered by a remote with delay and another camera to the side videotaping me. In addition to the stills that fed the montage, I made a brief video of my activity as the captures were made. Pictures of the apple orchard were made in many shoots between April 2021 and December 2023 during which I returned to the same place to photograph the rows of trees moving from end of row to space between to end of row to space between laterally to create four distinct views throughout the four seasons. In the montage I used 4 separate views each from summer and from winter. The performance aspect of Recovery was with a sense that everyone is going through or goes through similar trials in living.
Video still at instant of flash paired with simultaneous capture used in the montage.
