Diptych Portraits

Diptych Portrait: Mori, Oct. 21, 2018

The Diptych Portraits began as a collaboration with another photographer when we both had prostate cancer. We photographed each other closely cropped in the same recumbent poses from above and in the same setting. It seemed natural to pair them as diptychs, and the views from above offered an ambiguity when displayed vertically that we felt expressed our vulnerability. Though he died of cancer in 2018, I continued to experiment with the configuration in portrait work. In some of the Diptych Portraits, the subjects’ proximity to the camera vary causing apparent discontinuities of scale. Twin views in the portraits allow for exploring multiple states of being, while use of the camera to isolate specific fleeting moments offers possibility for viewers to hover with the subjects.
